A reporter tracks down the remnants of Harold Camping’s apocalyptic movement and finds out you don’t have to be crazy to believe something nuts.
An excerpt of his write-up:
Another engineer I came to know had spent most of his retirement savings, well over a half-million dollars, taking out full-page newspaper ads and buying an RV that he had custom-painted with doomsday warnings. Even when I pressed, he wasn’t willing to admit any doubts about whether October 21 would really, finally, be it. “How can you say that when you see that all this beautiful information is in the Bible?” he asked me, his voice rising. “How can everything we’ve learned be a lie?”Report: A Year After the Non-Apocalypse: Where Are They Now? (May 18, 2012)
Isn't that exactly the same mentality the JWs display in conversation?

Celestial >> Define the Bible and its books.
Based on 66 booklets? Or, all the manuscripts, including the ommitted and hidden (stashed away, Vatican-hidden) texts?

Billy the Ex-Bethelite >> So that means that Armageddon is cancelled, right?
Nothing new here, really.
When the upper echelon messes up forecast dates, it always turns out to be someone else's fault: "Jehovah is allowed to change his direction, change his will to maneauver his chariot".

GB: "We don't know if Jehovah wants us to build new headquarters, but we're doing it anyway..."
by cedars inthe latest august 15th watchtower study edition features an interesting review of the society's annual meeting.. one comment struck me as evidence that the governing body isn't quite as "discreet" as it claims.. here is what the article said:.
"there are plans to develop a 248-acre (100 ha) property at warwick.
'although we are not yet certain of jehovahs will regarding warwick,' said brother pierce, 'we are proceeding to develop the site with the intention of relocating the world headquarters of jehovahs witnesses there.

Previously spouted wisdom went like this:
The faithful slave is also discreet in that it neither acts immodestly, running ahead of Jehovah, nor lags behind when God’s direction on a matter is clear. (w09 2/15 p. 27 par. 12)
It is becoming increasingly clear that for anyone of us to keep pace with the New World society we must respond with the same readiness and willingness to Jehovah’s directions as did the faithful prophets and apostles. (w56 6/1 p. 340 par. 12)
Reading the above mentioned quotes, then my distict impression is, the GB is not in tune with their heavenly abode any longer. Decades ago they had the dignity to admit that, "since it is clear that the Great Pyramid was not built at the direction of Jehovah", they were either running ahead or lagging behind with directions.
Now the boy scouts are just saying, "lunch is packed, the weather is fine, and we are heading north-east. We set trail markers for you, Jehovah, in case you want to follow".
Something ain't right. -

Latest WT: "Facebook = a powerful medicine"??
by cedars inok, i think the writing department has well and truly lost the plot now!.
on page 14 of the august 15th watchtower, there is an extensive section on the perils of the internet, with the caption "do you heed bible-based warnings about the internet?
" in large intimidating letters.

How unwise it would be to use such sites without reading that material ! (wt 2012, 8/15, page 14)
Let's see:
“By all means, then, if you use a social network at all, protect your privacy and monitor the amount of time you spend on it.” (Awake! July 2011, page 27)
... BEEN THERE ...
“Also, carefully review the comments you’ve posted — as well as those that others have posted on your page.” (Awake! August 2011, page 11)
... DONE THAT ...
“If you are mindful of what you are doing, you can maintain a measure of privacy on a social network. It doesn’t lead to trouble unless you let it.” (Awake! February 2012, page 6)
... LOG IN ...
Thank Jehovah and the GB for protecting my privacy and private parts.

There is nothing to download under San Mateo Court Trial Testimony – Segment 4 & 5.
Where can it be found?
You search this site for " /wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Court-Trial-Testimony-Redwood-City-76-101.pdf " but this page no longer exists.

Pioneers and Their Way of Counting "Time"
by Eiben Scrood inin the congregations in my area there was an expression to the effect that 'there's counting time and then there's the way pioneers count their time'.
the watchtower's guidelines were pretty strict on when time could be counted.
some pioneers followed it and others didn't.. on particularly motivated young man comes to mind, he would work full-time or close to it and pioneer.

JW Study, close to baptism, begins to ask questions following our conversation
by uk_ex_jw ini will keep this brief.. a jw study who recently contacted me on facebook, has been to the elder's following a conversation with me in where i outlined my reasons for leaving the wt society.. he originally started asking me why i wasn't a jw anymore and how important it was that i returned to the 'truth' and how the devil was ruling the world and turning people against jehovah's people etc etc.
he was, as you would expect, full of beans and enthusiastic about what he was learning and telling me how he couldn't wait to get baptised now.. he was studying years ago - that is how i knew him.
since then he has been off doing his own thing and now they have managed to rope him back again.. i have explained to him that i do not believe that jw's have the truth, sent him video's, and other evidence, about the paedophilia situation, un scandal, links to the mason's, changed doctrines regarding blood/generation and so forth.. he sent me a reply and said that he wasn't sure anymore and that he agreed with me that the wt society was controlling.

Has anyone ever used a non-NWT (New World Translation) bible at meetings / study?
by biometrics inabout 1 year ago (before i faded), i purchased an old king james bible from ebay and started using it in the meetings and when a brother came over to study with me.. a common reaction of fellow jws was to stare at the bible, then say "what type of bible is that?
", then they'd sometimes ask to look at it, and flip to john 1:1. when they saw what it said, they'd treat it like it was apostate material, even though a few decades earler it was the same bible jws used.. i strongly encourage any lurkers/faders to use another bible at the meetings and see what type of reactions you get.. .
